Albania's agriculture becomes fastest growing sector in H1

Xinhua, September 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Albanian agriculture became the fastest growing sector in the country's economy in the first half of this year, Albanian Minister of Agriculture Edmond Panariti said on Thursday.

"The latest data on the performance of the agriculture over the past six months shows that the value of the domestic agricultural production reached 4.4 billion leks (35.2 million U.S. dollars) compared to 2.9 billion leks in the same period of the previous year," the minister said.

He pointed out that vegetable exports lead the positive growth of this sector, with vegetable exports estimated at around 2.1 billion leks compared to 946 million leks during the same period of 2014.

According to Panariti, the high growth rate of Albania's agriculture sector reflects the government's policies based on creation and further consolidation of the chain of values, enhancement of products quality and the significant improvement of trading and processing.

Panariti confirmed that successful implementation of subsidy schemes has increased the surface area of green houses by around 35 percent.

According to him, vegetables and fruits, followed by medicinal and aromatic herbs and eggs production, are seen as the sectors with the most spectacular growth this year. Endit
