Sofia joins European Mobility Week

Xinhua, September 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian capital on Wednesday for the ninth consecutive year joined the European Mobility Week, a European Union initiative that aims to encourage innovative solutions for today's urban mobility challenges.

A retro tram running on the city center will be the main attraction during all seven days, along with other events such as photo contest, demonstration of a car powered by hydrogen, and night athletic and cycling races.

The climax will occur next Tuesday when the downtown will be closed to cars, and there will be held competitions for children, musical performances, and open classes in yoga and tai chi, the municipality said.

"We work very hard to make our city cleaner and greener despite traffic volumes," Sofia mayor Jordanka Fandakova told the launching ceremony at Alexander Nevsky Square.

To achieve this, in recent years the municipality purchased new vehicles for public transport, expanded the subway, the most environmentally friendly urban transport, and built bike lanes, Fandakova said. Endit
