Fiji signs maritime boundary agreement with France, Tuvalu

Xinhua, September 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Fiji on Wednesday signed an agreement on tri-junction delimitation of maritime areas under the jurisdiction of Fiji, France and Tuvalu, the Fijian government announced.

As part of the exclusive sovereignty claims over areas of ocean space that must be based on accurate technical data and meet the provisions of the United Nations Law of the Sea Convention (UNCLOS) , the delimitation signing "marks the success of three coastal states in the Pacific region achieving an amicable solution for all three who share common and overlapping exclusive economic zones (EEZs) which is referred to as having a tri-junction point between three countries", Fiji's Department of Information said.

After signing the UNCLOS in 1982, Fiji, whose closest neighbors to the north, northeast and southwest include Tuvalu, France's Wallis and Futuna and France's New Caledonia, signed a maritime boundary treaty with France in 1983, and did the same with Tuvalu in October, 2014. Endi
