Xinhua, September 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Casualties were feared as an explosion went off in the western outskirts of Afghanistan's capital city of Kabul on Wednesday, sources said.

"A blast took place in Paghman district at around 11:00 a.m. ( local time) near the district's administrative building. The area is cordoned off by security forces and the target of the attack is said to be a vehicle of criminal investigation police," witness Abdul Basir told Xinhua, adding several police vehicles and ambulances were rushing to the site.

"I do confirm an incident has taken place in Paghman. There is fear of casualties. Our police have launched an investigation into the incident and details will be revealed to public later on the day," a Kabul police spokesman told Xinhua by phone.

The nature of the blast was not determined.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

A thick black smoke was seen rising above the site, according to the witness. Endi
