Abu Sayyaf abducts 10 workers in S. Philippines

Xinhua, September 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Abu Sayyaf militants held hostage at least 10 construction workers on Monday in a remote town of Basilan province in southern Philippines, according to the military.

The military said the victims were on board a dump truck when they were flagged down at 9 a.m. (1300 GMT) Monday at the village of Upper Binembengan in the town of Sumisip.

The Joint Task Group Basilan (JTGB) said about 20 Abu Sayyaf militants held the 10 construction workers as hostage and commandeered the truck.

The gunmen fled toward the nearby village of Crossing Pennas with their captives.

The victims who were identified as Muslim residents were laborers of a private construction firm working on a road in Sumisip.

The provincial government said negotiation efforts have been going on for the release of the hostages. Endi
