A fourth man on Wednesday was confirmed dead, yet another victim of the flash floods which caused havoc in the south east of Spain on Monday.
The body of the victim, who had been reported missing since Monday's storms, was discovered on Wednesday on a beach between the towns of Castell and Calahonda, an area which was inundated with an estimated 80 liters of rain per square meter in a brief, 40-minute downpour.
The other victims who had already been confirmed as dead were: a 61-year-old man in the coastal town of Polopos, close to Granada, who drowned when his car was swept out to sea by flood water; a 51-year-old who was discovered drowned in a ravine close to the city of Alburiol (Granada province); and a third person, aged 60, who was discovered in the same province at the beach of Castell de Ferro on Tuesday.
The power of the rain turned streets into torrents, sweeping cars and even heavy vehicles away with the power of the water. Dry river beds saw their level rise to two or three meters of rushing water in a matter of minutes in the regions of Valencia, Murcia and the south-east of Andalusia, provoking over 300 emergency calls in the provinces of Malaga, Almeria, Granada and Jaen.
