Spanish rail unions announce series of strikes

Xinhua, September 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Spanish railway unions on Wednesday announced a series of partial stoppages which will affect travelers during September and October.

The unions at Spain's railway operator RENFE, have called the stoppages, which will all be on Fridays and last for two hours, for September, 18th and 25th, as well as the 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd of October.

These stoppages, which are supported by all of the unions working with the company, coincide with a similar serious of partial stoppages which were previously announced by workers of the railway infrastructure company, ADIF for the same days.

Meanwhile train drivers have also announced strikes for September 11th (this Friday), as well as for next Monday and Tuesday (14th and 15th).

The industrial action has been called for several reasons, although mainly in protest at the halt in negotiation over the new collective agreement for wages and conditions at the company, while unions are also demanding that the company starts to employ more workers to prevent the average age of the workforce increasing.

Meanwhile unions also claimed that both RENFE and ADIF are externalizing contracts to private companies and ask that RENFE's freight division is not privatized as well. Endit
