Bulgaria refuses Russian flights to Syria

Bulgaria did not allow Russian planes to pass through its airspace en route to Syria, officials said Tuesday.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria would like to confirm that it has refused to grant clearance to Russian military transport aircraft to fly through the Bulgarian airspace on a route from the Russian Federation to Syria in the period 1-24 September 2015," the ministry said in a statement.

"The reason for the refusal is associated with incorrect information in the requests to fly over the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria regarding the purpose of the flights and the cargo," the ministry added.

Bulgaria, a former Russian ally, has been a NATO member since 2004. Endit
