Most slovenians want to help refugees

Slovenians are overwhelmingly in favor of helping refugees who are entering the European Union (EU), though few would be willing to offer them shelter in their homes, a poll by the local Slovenske novice concluded on Monday.

About 62 percent said Slovenia was obligated to help refugees against 30 percent who said it was not; 8 percent were undecided, while a full 76 percent said they would personally help refugees and less than a fifth would not, according to the poll.

Asked about the numbers, the poll said, a fifth said Slovenia could accept up to a hundred and over 40 percent said several hundred, with 15 percent choosing more than 1,000.

As for the kind of help people are willing to offer, three-quarters would help with clothes and shoes, 14 percent with cash and only 3 percent would accept refugees under their roof.

Overall, the older population, those living in urban areas and the better educated are more in favor of accepting refugees.

The poll was conducted by Delo Stik, an attached tabloid to the most influential Slovenian daily newspaper, between Aug. 31 and Sept. 3, and involved 600 respondents. Endit
