Ireland's new car sales 38 pct higher in August

A total of 8,572 new cars in Ireland were licensed for the first time in August, up 38.2 percent on the same month the previous year, according to official figures on Monday.

The figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed that the total number of new cars licensed in the first eight months of this year passed the 100,000 mark.

This is the first time since 2008 that this figure has been reached in any year, according to the CSO figures.

In the first eight months of 2015, 108,522 new cars were licensed, a rise of 31.5 percent compared with the same period last year, the CSO said.

Volkswagen was the most popular make of new cars licensed in August, followed by Toyota, Ford, Nissan and Hyundai. Together these five brands represented just under half of all new cars licensed. Endit
