GOP leadership seeks loyalty pledge amid jitters of possible independent run by Trump

Xinhua, September 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

As U.S. billionaire real estate developer Donald Trump's repeated refusal to rule out a third-party run continues to jangle the nerves of the Republican leadership, a written pledge was reportedly circulated Wednesday asking for Republican candidates to pledge that they won't run independently if they fail to win the party's nomination.

According to the political newspaper the Politico, at least two campaigns said they had received a call from Katie Walsh, chief of staff with the Republican National Committee, to see if they would be willing to sign the pledge.

"I (name) affirm that if I do not win the 2016 Republican nomination for president of the United States I will endorse the 2016 Republican presidential nominee regardless of who it is," said the pledge obtained by the Politico.

"I further pledge that I will not seek to run as an independent or write-in candidate nor will I seek or accept the nomination for president of any other party," the pledge concluded.

During the Republican Party's first prime-time primary debate in early August, all of the top 10 candidates but Trump, the current front-runner, said in national opinion surveys they would waive the right to run independently should they lose the party's nomination. Enditem
