Hungary's Royal Prince hails Cambodia for paying attention to cultural heritage protection

Xinhua, September 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Hungary's Royal Prince Karl von Habsburg, president of the Association of National Committees of the Blue Shield, on Tuesday praised Cambodia for paying attention to the protection and preservation of national heritage properties, a Cambodian spokesman said.

The prince expressed his appreciation during a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen at the Peace Palace in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, according to Eang Sophalleth, a spokesman for the prime minister.

Karl said his association has worked mainly to protect the world's cultural heritage threatened by wars and natural disasters, and his visit to Cambodia was to attend a regional seminar on the UNESCO's 1954 Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, which was held in Siem Reap province and Preah Vihear province from Tuesday to Thursday.

For his part, Hun Sen said the seminar, which was attended by Cambodian and ASEAN military officers, was essential to educate armed forces to avoid causing damage to cultural properties during any armed conflicts.

He said besides protecting and preserving the existing ancient temples, Cambodia has been searching for other heritage properties, which have hidden in jungles. Endi
