Protests continue in Nepal over proposed federalism, 4 injured

Protests organized by different dissenting political parties on federalism in the new constitution have continued in southern Nepal.

The bordering city to India, Birgunj, has remained tensed since early morning on Tuesday after the cadres of Madhes-based parties took to the streets defying curfew.

"Though the local administration had imposed curfew in the city, the protestors clashed with police, leaving four persons sustained bullet injuries," the local police office told Xinhua by phone.

Those injured are undergoing treatment in Narayani sub-regional hospital. On Monday, a protestor died in course of treatment after sustaining gunshot during curfew while dozens of protestors were injured.

Terai districts have remained curfewed since more than two weeks due to the strike launched by dissenting parties over seven- state federal model.

Last week, seven police personnel and a toddler were killed by the irate protestors in Tikapur of far western Nepal, while seven protestors have already died in course of clashes in different districts earlier.

The total death toll in the protests against proposed federalism has reached 16. Endi
