Real Madrid completed the signing of Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea on Monday evening in a deal which ends what has been the long-running sage of the summer.
The Spain international returns home for a price of around 40 million euros (around 45 million US dollars) in a deal which sees Costa Rican international Keylor Navas move in the other direction.
De Gea's transfer had looked to be on the cards for several weeks and Manchester United coach Louis Van Gaal had left the goalkeeper in the stands for his side's opening games of the season stating that De Gea's concentration had been affected by all of the speculation over his move.
However, the fact that Real Madrid signed Kiko Casilla, another Spain international, from Espanyol for six million euros earlier this summer and the excellent form shown by Costa Rican international Keylor Navas, who even saved a penalty in the 5-0 win over Betis on Saturday night, had raised doubts about the move.
It was Navas' uncertainty about leaving a club where he has become a fans' favorite over the past months which proved to be the final stumbling block and which kept newswires and social network sites on edge all day until the deal was completed at around 20.00 hours local time, just four hours before the transfer window closed.
The former Atletico Madrid keeper will be presented to the fans and the press on Tuesday before joining the Spain national team and will probably make his debut against Espanyol on Sept 12th.
One date for De Gea's diary is October 4th when Real Madrid visit Atletico's Vicente Calderon Stadium, where he can expect a hostile reception. Endit
