Myanmar delays release of nationwide electoral registers to September

Xinhua, August 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar's Union Election Commission has delayed the release of nationwide electoral registers to September instead of late August for the upcoming general election scheduled for Nov. 8., according to the commission Monday.

The commission had planned to publicize the voters' list nationwide starting Aug. 23 but since deadly flood was occurring across the country especially in the month of August, the publication of the lists was forced to postpone, it said.

The voters will have 14 days to verify their legitimacy to vote, the commission added.

There are 32 million eligible voters across the country, according to the commission.

Candidates are set to canvass for election in their respective constituencies starting from Sept. 8 to Nov. 6.

According to a preliminary candidate list announced by the commission over the weekend, a total of 6,189 candidates including 323 independent ones have so far registered to run the November election.

Of the total, 5,866 candidates are nominated from 93 political parties.

Of the 5,866 political party candidates, the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), led by U Htay Oo, account for 1,134, while the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) , led by Aung San Suu Kyi, tops with 1,151.

Of the 1,134 USDP candidates, 318 will contest for seats in the House of Representatives (Lower House), 165 in the House of Nationalities (Upper House) and 651 in the Region or State Parliament .

Of the 1,151 NLD candidates, 325 will seek seats with the Lower House, 167 with the Upper House and 659 with the Region or State Parliament.

According to the commission's earlier figures, of the 1,171 constituencies designated for the vote at four levels of the parliament across the country, 330 constituencies will be contested for the Lower House, 168 for the Upper House, 644 for the Region or State Parliament and 29 for national race representatives.

The commission is still scrutinizing the nomination of candidates from political parties and the list of candidates will be finalized by Aug. 27. Endi
