Pay gap decreasing between males, females in Switzerland

According to figures released by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Friday, Swiss female employees working in the private sector earned 21.3 percent less than their male counterparts in 2012, compared to 25 percent less in 2008.

While providing an overview of the confederation's average pay gap difference, FSO's report also indicates that the salary discrepancy between the confederation's male and female workforce largely depends on the sector in which they work.

FSO explained that the difference in the amount of money earned is the lowest in the hotel and catering sector where women earned 11 percent less than men, while the highest income difference is observed in the financial and insurance sector where the salary gap reaches 34 percent.

Despite the gender pay-gap being substantially lower in the public sector, FSO nevertheless recorded a 16.5 percent difference in 2012.

Figures furthermore indicate that close to two thirds (63.4 percent) of those employees working in the Swiss private sector and earning less than 4,000 CHF per month were women in 2012, compared to 66.1 percent four years prior.

At the other end of the spectrum, only 26.5 percent of workers earning a monthly salary above 8,000 CHF were female, a figure which decreases to 17.9 percent when considering the number of women working in jobs paying over 16,000 CHF every month. Endit
