New Zealand engineers to help with Nepal earthquake rebuild

The New Zealand government has sent a team of 15 earthquake engineers to Nepal to help with the rebuild following the devastating earthquakes that hit the Himalayan nation earlier this year, Foreign Minister Murray McCully said Friday.

"The specialist engineers departed for Nepal this week and will remain there until November," McCully said in a statement.

"They will provide Nepal's government with technical support in seismic assessment, design of repair and retro-fit solutions, barricading, shoring, temporary works, deconstruction and demolition," he said.

"The cost of the deployment is 1 million NZ dollars (653,600 U. S. dollars) and this support builds on the 2 million NZ dollars (1. 3 million U.S. dollars) New Zealand provided in the immediate aftermath of the quakes, which included a smaller deployment of engineers."

A quake in April and a second one in May together killed almost 9,000 people and caused widespread damage in and around the Kathmandu Valley.

"New Zealanders feel a close connection to Nepal and our on- going support for the rebuild reflects this," McCully said. Endi
