Gunbattle between police, protesters in Ferguson seriously injures man

Xinhua, August 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

A gunbattle erupted in Ferguson, Missouri, between police and protesters on Sunday during a protest on the anniversary of the killing of 18-year-old black man Michael Brown by a white police officer, seriously wounding a man.

The exchange of gunfire took place late Sunday night and lasted about 20 minutes, seriously wounding a man, according to the St. Louis county police chief.

The man was hospitalized in a critical, unstable condition, and was undergoing surgery, Chief Jon Belmar told reporters on Monday.

He said one officer was treated for cuts to his face after being hit by a brick near the spot where unarmed Brown was shot dead by a white policeman on Aug. 9 2014.

Police showed photos of two unmarked police vehicles that took gunfire.

Several commemorative events took place in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, where Brown lived, to mark the anniversary of his death.

The day began peacefully, but turned violent shortly after 9 p.m., when a beauty store was looted. An hour later, the gunshots began.

Brown's death stirred up a nationwide spate of protests. Endi
