2nd LD Writethru: Car bombing rocks Afghan capital airport, killing 4

Xinhua, August 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least four people were killed and 15 others wounded after a suicide car bombing ripped through the front gate of Afghan capital's airport on Monday, an official said.

"The initial information said that some four killed and 15 injured were admitted to Kabul hospitals, including the Sardar Mohammad Dawood Khan military hospital, following this noon's blast. The number of the causalities may change," a public health spokesman, Aziz Kawoosi, told Xinhua.

"The blast took place at around 12:00 p.m. (local time) at the front entrance of the Hamid Karzai International Airport," a security source told Xinhua earlier anonymously.

The obvious target of the attack was an armored vehicle running at the site, the source said, without saying whom the vehicle belonged to.

He said all flights were delayed for at least four to five hours, he said.

Several vehicles were destroyed by the blast while the force of the explosion damaged the surrounding buildings.

Government troops cordoned off the area shortly after the blast, keeping people from gathering.

Several ambulances and fire engines were rushing to the site, witness Farhad Mohammadi said, adding that "the explosion caused a plume of grey smoke to rise above the scene."

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

On Friday, about 50 people were killed and hundreds wounded in a string of attacks in Kabul. Endi
