An earthquake of 5.9 magnitude jolted South of the Fiji Islands on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 264.3 km, was initially determined to be at 26.4759 degrees south latitude and 178.2989 degrees west longitude. (Fiji-Earthquake)

KABUL -- A car bombing went off early Friday morning in eastern part of Afghan capital of Kabul, leaving casualties and damages, said a security source.

"The incident occurred near an army camp in Shah Shahid area at around 01:00 a.m. Friday, causing casualties and that details will be revealed later on the day," the source told Xinhua anonymously.

ISLAMABAD -- At least five people were killed and three others injured in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan's northwest tribal area of North Waziristan on Thursday night, local media reported.

Abb Takk News said that the U.S. pilotless aircraft fired two missiles at the headquarters of Haqqani network, located in Datta Khel area of North Waziristan, a semi-autonomous tribal area along Pakistan-Afghanistan border. (Pakistan-U.S.-Drone Strike)

ISLAMABAD -- At least 166 people were killed, 128 injured and 1,087,025 others affected by heavy rains and flash floods in parts of Pakistan over last three weeks, officials from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said Thursday.

Reema Zuberi, spokesperson of the NDMA, told Xinhua that the torrential rains that have been lashing the country since July 15, damaged 8,471 houses, inundated 2,976 villages and destroyed standing crops on 233,688 acres of land. (Pakistan-Flash Flood)

ROME -- Nearly 400 migrants were rescued on Thursday after their boat run into trouble off the Libyan coast a day after a similar disaster killed at least 25 migrants and left dozens missing in the same area, Italian reports said.

There were dozens of women and children from Syria, Bangladesh and Sub-Saharan Africa among the migrants rescued by the Italian coast guard, which had a ship in the area as part of a search and rescue mission for those missing from Wednesday's wreckage. VILNIUS -- Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaite said on Thursday the downsizing of the NATO air policing mission in Baltic skies is taking into account other security measures taken by allies in the region.

In an interview to national radio LRT, Grybauskaite confirmed NATO's air policing mission is to be slashed by half as of September, leaving eight fighter jets to take care of the Baltic skies. (NATO-Security) Endi
