Pakistan army seeks UN inquiry into Indian ceasefire violations

Pakistan army on Friday approached a UN mission group over the recent "ceasefire violations" by India that have killed at least four civilians and injured five others.
Pakistan and India declared ceasefire in 2003 along the Line of Control (LoC). However, both sides occasionally exchanged fire. The recent escalations have increased tensions between the nuclear neighbours.
"Pakistan Army registered Indian army ceasefire violations with the UN Military Observer Group (UNMOGIP) and highlighted the Indians' use of heavy mortars and machine guns on civil population, living along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary," the army said.
The UNMOGIP was informed that four civilians including a 18- year-old Zareena Bibi were killed over the past two days.
"The UNMOGIP was asked to use its good offices to investigate Indian ceasefire violations," the army said.
Pakistani Foreign Ministry had also summoned the Indian High Commissioner to the Foreign Ministry on Thursday and lodged a formal protest.
The incident came just days after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in Russia after a long period of break in high level contacts over exchange of harsh statements and fire on the LoC.
The Pakistan army said an Indian spy drone was brought down on Wednesday.
An army statement said the spy drone shot down by Pakistani troops had intruded into Pakistan along the LoC near Bhimber sector. The LoC divides the two countries in the disputed Kashmir region. Endi
