Home advantage appears to be paying off for Canada at the Pan American Games in Toronto. The host country continued medal haul in rowing, canoeing and diving in day three competition.
Though excitement for the games was slow to build, it's now reached fever pitch. With 17 gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze, Canada kept leading all nations in both gold and overall medals, closely followed by the United States.
On Monday, Team Canada continued to dominate on the water after bringing in eight medals, including three gold. Former Olympic champion Adam van Koeverden kicked off the medal haul Monday morning by taking bronze in the K-1 1000m sprint.
"I was doing everything I could to keep my boat moving, and today I just didn't have the legs in the last 100," the four-time Olympic medallist said. "I'm disappointed in that, my training indicated that I have more, but that's just where my training is at now."
Mark Oldershaw, Canada's Pan Am flag-bear, won silver in the C-1 1000m sprint.
Led by gold-medal performances by the men's coxless four and the women's double sculls, Canadian rowers combined to add three more medals to Canada's impressive early haul on Monday.
Meanwhile, Montreal's Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion from Laval, Quebec, won Canada's second diving gold in women's synchronized 10-meter platform. They earned 316.89 points to beat Brazil (291.36) and Mexico (287.91).
"This medal has a lot of value to us not only because we put a lot of work in this, but because it's a little balm on my wound of two days ago," said Filion, who won silver in the individual event on Sunday.
Phillippe Gagne and Francois Imbeau-Dulac won silver during the men's 3m synchronized springboard event while Amanda Chudoba won gold in women's trap shooting.
Chudoba edged American Kayle Browning in a shoot-off after the final round was tied at 11.
Also Monday, Toronto's Jordan Belchos won Canada's first ever Pan Am roller speed skating medal with a bronze in the men's 10,000 meters. "My mom was crying," Belchos said. "It was incredible."
Mexico's Mike Paez and Colombia's Juan Sebastian Sanz Neira walked away with a gold and a silver in the event. Enditem
