Sri Lanka's ruling party to expand development projects after polls

Xinhua, July 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

The ruling United National Party ( UNP) on Saturday said that it hopes to expand some of the development projects in the island nation if it forms a majority government after the parliamentary elections scheduled to be held next month.

Kabir Hashim, UNP member and Sri Lanka's Minister of Highways, told a UNP special convention that the government had canceled some projects which he termed as "white elephant" projects.

However, the minister insisted that development work of the country had not been suspended or stalled as a result of a new government taking office for 100 days following the presidential election held in January this year.

The minister, addressing a large gathering at the convention, said several highway projects, including the Colombo-Kandy highway project and the Matara-Hambantota extension of the Southern Highway project had been launched by the present government.

The opposition United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and the previous government headed by former president Mahinda Rajapakse had accused the UNP government of placing roadblocks before some of the development projects in the country. Endi
