17-member team watch cauldron flame at Universiade

Xinhua, July 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

There is a special team, whose job is to keep the flame in the Main Stadium burning around the clock throughout the Gwangju Universiade.

The Gwangju Universiade Organizing Committee's (GUOC) torch management team, consisting of 17 people, have been managing the flame morning, noon and night ever since the torch was carried into the Main Stadium on the opening day of tournament on July 3.

"We have been giving our utmost effort to make sure the Universiade torch stay aflame as it is the symbol of the event," the GUOC's torch team's manager Seo jeong-yoon said.

In cooperation with local officials including firefighters and Hae Yang City Gas Company, the team have been monitoring the state of the torch 24 hours a day.

The Gwangju Universiade torch was first lit at the Paris-Sorbonne University on May 18 where the International Universities Championships, the first student games, began in 1923.

The torch arrived in Gwangju last month and toured 3,700 kilometers around the country with 3,150 bearers. The final torch bearers at the opening ceremony were former baseball player Park Chan-ho and gymnast Yang Hak-seon. Endi
