1st LD: Explosion at Italian consulate in Cairo kills one, injures four

A powerful explosion occurred in front of Italian consulate in downtown Cairo Saturday, killing one person and injuring four, state-run news agency MENA reported.

Eyewitnesses told media that the consulate was seriously damaged and its surrounding buildings were affected as well. Security officials said that early investigations showed the explosion was caused by a bomb which had been planted under a car parked near the consulate. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the explosion.

Since the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi by the army in July, 2013, Egypt has experienced frequent attacks launched by extremists, leaving hundreds of soldiers, police and civilians killed.

The Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (ABM) group, which had vowed loyalty to Islamic State (IS) group, claimed responsibility for most of the attacks. Enditem
