Xinhua, June 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Several civilians were killed and wounded Tuesday after a suicide car bombing targeted a foreign military convoy near airport in Afghan capital of Kabul, an official source said.

"The suicide blast hit a foreign military convoy running along the airport road at around 01:25 p.m. local time (GMT 0855). The explosion caused civilian deaths and injuries. I cannot provide a precise detail. But further details will be revealed later on the day," the source told Xinhua anonymously.

"At least five civilians were killed while two dozen others were wounded following the attack as one military vehicle and several civilian cars were destroyed by the powerful blast," witness Noor Ahmad told Xinhua near the site.

The targeted convoy was running along the four-line street from Hamid Karzai International Airport towards Massoud Square, where the Afghan Supreme Court, a NATO headquarters and the U.S. embassy are located, he said.

Further details about the blast are still forthcoming amid the absence of official statements.

Meantime, unofficial sources said that the convoy was belonged to U.S. troops of the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission.

A thick black smoke was seen rise above the site.

Security forces have cordoned off the area for precautionary measures.

The explosion also damaged buildings and shattered the windowpanes of nearby dozens of apartment buildings.

No group has claimed responsibility yet for the attack, but the Taliban insurgent group routinely claims responsibility for such attacks.

On June 22, two civilians and six attackers were killed and over 30 people sustained injuries after the Taliban attacked parliament building in western Kabul.

Earlier on Tuesday, two civilians were killed and 51 others wounded after a Taliban truck bombing targeted a police station in southern Helmand province. Endi
