Riots broke out here late Monday following the death of a tourist from the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba after he was arrested by police.
The riots occurred in the Schilderswijk, a neighborhood in The Hague with a high percentage of population of non-Western background, following a demonstration early Monday.
Shop windows, bus shelters and phone booths were smashed, and fire was set in the streets.
The 42-year-old tourist, Mitch Henriquez, died Sunday in a hospital after his arrest at a music festival a day earlier.
Hundreds of people gathered at the police station in the Schilderswijk Monday night to express their anger over his death, shouting: "Police murderers."
According to the public prosecutor, Henriquez, who was in the Netherlands to visit his family, might have shouted that he had a weapon when attending the music festival in a park.
The police used force to bring him to the police station, and a video footage of the arrest on the Internet led to the demonstration.
The Dutch authorities will launch an investigation into the incident, while witnesses have been called to send in videos of the arrest. An autopsy is also scheduled to be carried out in order to determine the cause of Henriquez's death.
Aruba is an island in the southern Caribbean Sea, located about 29 km north of the coast of Venezuela. Collectively, Aruba and the other Dutch islands in the Caribbean are often called the Netherlands Antilles or the "Dutch Caribbean". Endi
