Palestinian prisoner ends hunger strike

Xinhua, June 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

An activist with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group who had been on a hunger strike decided early Monday to end his strike, following an agreement with Israel to free him.

Jawad Bolos, the lawyer of the imprisoned activist, Khader Adnan, told Xinhua that Adnan ended his 55-day hunger strike following an agreement reached with Israeli authorities to release him on July 12.

The deal was signed between the authorized bodies and Israel following negotiations on Sunday night, said the lawyer.

The Palestinian Prisoner's Club Association said in an emailed press statement that Adnan achieved what he wanted and what he did was a big achievement.

Adnan, 37, is a prominent activist in the Islamic Jihad organization. On May 5, Adnan began a hunger strike to protest the renewal of his administrative detention.

In 2012, Adnan went on a hunger strike for 66 days, and dozens of prisoners followed him then. Israel released him and arrested him again in June last year.

On Wednesday, an Israeli human and medical rights organization warned that Adnan faced "risk of death" due to the hunger strike and called for his immediate release. Endi
