2nd LD: Egypt prosecutor general wounded in car bombing

Xinhua, June 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Egyptian Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat was wounded on Monday in a car bombing in Cairo, local media reported.

The explosion hit Barakat's motorcade while he was about to leave for work, state news agency MENA reported, citing a security source.

Initial medical examination said Barakat was in good condition, MENA said, adding that two bodyguards and one civilian were also injured in the explosion.

The bomb was planted under one cars of Barakat's motorcade in a side street in Cairo's Heliopolis district, MENA said.

Many cars and buildings nearby were damaged in the blast.

The bombing came after an Islamic State affiliate based in Sinai posted a video clip on Monday supposedly showing attacks in May that killed two judges and a prosecutor.

The group has vowed more attacks on judges in revenge for life and death sentences handed down to Islamists.

Barakat himself has referred thousands of Islamists to trial since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Endit
