Chile defender Jara banned for rest of Copa America

Xinhua, June 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Chile defender Gonzalo Jara has been banned for three matches for poking his finger in the backside of Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani.

The incident, which occurred during Chile's 1-0 Copa America quarterfinal victory last Wednesday, led to Cavani's dismissal after he retaliated by slapping Jara in the face.

Jara will miss his team's semifinal clash with Peru on Monday and next Saturday's final, should Chile advance.

He will also be suspended for the first round of 2018 World Cup qualifiers. In addition, the 29-year-old was fined 7,500 US dollars.

South American football governing body Conmebol said in a statement the penalty was for "unsporting behavior".

On Thursday, Jara's club Mainz condemned the full-back's actions and said they were open to offers to sell him to rival clubs. Endi
