5-country netball tournament starts in Botswana

Xinhua, June 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Host Botswana got a rude awakening to the five-nation invitational tournament here when they lost 42-44 to Swaziland in the opening game played on Sunday afternoon.

The game remained tightly contested until the very last quarter when Swaziland managed to hold on to their slim lead to the final whistle. According to Botswana Netball Association (BONA) President Tebogo Lebotse-Sebego, they are hosting the tournament to gauge their readiness to host the 2017 World Youth Netball Cup.

"It provides a great opportunity for us to test our hosting capability," she said, adding that BONA intends to get many hosting chances ahead of 2017.

Five countries, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Zambia and Tanzania, are competing in the tournament that will go on until Wednesday. The tournament started following the postponement of the Africa Netball Championships that were scheduled to take place in Namibia.

Meanwhile African Netball (AN) concluded their annual general meeting in Botswana on Saturday.

Botswana's Lebotse-Sebego was re-elected as president for the continental body for the second term. Eleven African countries attended the meeting. Endi
