Anfield hero Gerrard arrives in LA to start new playing career

Xinhua, June 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard spent Sunday getting to know his new home as he prepared to embark on a new playing career with Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy.

The 34 years old Anfield icon was greeted by Galaxy fans as he arrived at LA's LAX airport at the weekend with wife Alex.

Gerrard looked relaxed as he arrived, signing autographs for waiting fans before being whisked away by taxi.

Wife Alex sent a message Sunday to the couple's friends in Liverpool as they enjoyed a meal at the famous Hollywood celebrity haunt The Ivy.

Gerrard is expected to make his playing debut July 11 when Galaxy take on Club America.

Galaxy boss Bruce Arena has said in media reports that playing for the LA club will be an exciting challenge for Gerrard.

"He is really going to enjoy the experience. It will be a breath of fresh air for him," Arena was quoted as saying in British media Sunday.

Gerrard also said in weekend media reports in Britain, "I want to keep playing every week in the final few years of my playing career."

The midfielder has signed a lucrative 18-month contract with LA Galaxy and is already preparing for his family to move into a 16.8 million pounds mansion in Malibu.

Back in England some people following Gerrard's switch to the US were wondering how Americans will react to his strong Liverpool dialect, known locally as a 'Scouse accent'

Gerrard spent his entire playing career with Liverpool, becoming one of the celebrated 'Kop' legends, and earning his place in football history as the Liverpool team captain who captured the European Cup in one of the most nail biting finals in the cup's history. Endit
