Switzerland extradites former Bosnian commander to BiH

Xinhua, June 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

A former Bosnian military commander arrived in Sarajevo on Friday after he was extradited by Swiss authority.

Naser Oric, who was arrested in Switzerland on an arrest warrant from Serbian authorities in connection with war crimes in Bosnian War in 1990s, was both claimed by Bonsia and Herzegovina (BiH) and Serbia.

After his arrival in Sarajevo, Oric was handed over to BiH prosecutors.

The arrest had caused tension between BiH and Serbia, with Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic's planned visit to BiH canceled last week.

Switzerland decided to send Oric to BiH after he refused to be extradited to Serbia. Oric was tried by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and sentenced in 2006 to two years in prison for war crimes against Serbs during the 1990s war. He was acquitted on appeal two year later. Endit
