Thailand sees big insurgent violence drop around Ramadan

Xinhua, June 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Thailand's restive Deep South recorded a considerable drop in the number of insurgency-related violence in the month prior to the Muslim holy month of Ramadan as well as the first week of it, the authorities said Thursday.

During June 18-24, only five incidents of violence were reported, including one connected with insurgency, one ruled an accident and the other three pending further police investigation, according to the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4.

In the month prior to Ramadan, 13 incidents were recorded, down 73 percent year-on-year, figures from the ISOC showed.

Local shops in the Deep South, which refers to three Muslim, ethnic-Malay dominated southern border provinces -- Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and four districts of Songkhla province, have complied with the ban on selling and manufacturing fireworks and firecrackers during the month, the ISOC noted.

Over the past decade or so, insurgent violence in the Deep South has left more than 5,900 people dead and 10,600 others injured, according to figures from the military.

Security measures remain in place, the ISOC said, stressing local residents have the freedom to practice their religion in peace. Endi
