Cavani could leave Uruguay Copa America squad: coach

Xinhua, June 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Edinson Cavani could leave Uruguay's Copa America squad after the arrest of his father for allegedly crashing his vehicle while affected by alcohol and causing the death of a motorcyclist.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said on Tuesday a decision had not yet been made on whether the Paris Saint-Germain striker will continue at the tournament in Chile.

"It is a personal issue regarding Edinson who was not involved in anything but is nonetheless affected," Tabarez told reporters on Tuesday.

"We talked to him to extend our support to him. He is affected as anyone who would have such a thing happen to a member of their family."

Uruguay's next game is a quarterfinal clash against Chile in Santiago on Wednesday.

According to Uruguayan news service Subrayado, Cavani's father, Luis, is being held in police custody after the crash in the city of Salto on Monday night.

The 19-year-old motorcyclist was taken to hospital with severe head injuries and died early on Tuesday, the portal said.

Tabarez said he would continue to talk to Cavani to see if the forward was in a state of mind to play.

"What will happen in between now and the game is we can assess how the player has been affected," the coach said. "We will train and in the coming hours we will continue to talk to him." Endi
