Japan's ruling LDP plans leadership election on Sept. 20 report

Xinhua, June 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) eyes its triennial presidential election on September 20, with incumbent Prime Minister Shinzo Abe being expected to secure his position without a contest, local media reported.

The Sept. 20 election may be officially promulgated on Sept. 8 before Abe's LDP presidential term expires at the end of September, Japan's Kyodo News Agency cited a senior LDP official who declined to be named as reporting.

The Diet of Japan on Monday decided to extend its current session for more than three months through Sept. 27, the longest expansion under the postwar Constitution, as Abe is facing fierce opposition over his controversial security reforms.

Thus, the LDP leadership election will be held during the diet session. Endi
