Philippine vice president quits from Aquino's cabinet

Xinhua, June 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Philippine Vice President Jejomar Binay has resigned from President Benigno S. Aquino III's Cabinet, his media affairs head said Monday.

Binay quit as the chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council and as Presidential Adviser on Overseas Filipino Workers' Concern.

Joey Salgado, Binay's media affairs chief, said the vice president tendered "his irrevocable resignation from the Cabinet effective immediately."

He did not cite any reason for Binay's resignation.

Binay is facing corruption allegations for alleged overpriced projects in Makati City, Metro Manila, when he was still the mayor of the place.

He also expressed his intention to run for president in 2016 elections.

Salgado said Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. received Binay's resignation letter. Endi
