Violence against women worldwide remains an issue: Chinese ambassador

Xinhua, June 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

China's ambassador to the UN in Geneva Wu Hailong on Friday said "violence against women and girls remains one of the most pervasive human rights abuses around the world."

The ambassador was speaking in the context of the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which builds on the Nairobi Forward-looking Strategies for the Advancement of Women, and seeks to provide equal participation for women in economic, social, cultural and political decision-making.

Wu said that "despite efforts undertaken by the international community to eliminate all forms of violence against women including domestic violence, which have resulted in the strengthening of legislation and the criminal justice system, challenges and gaps are still remaining."

In light of this, he advocated a "transformative agenda," where particular emphasis is placed on the empowerment of women in socio-economic spheres, while also calling for the eradication of gender stereotypes.

"States should consider implementing legislation which enables the active involvement of women in the formal sector and in decision-making processes and actively promote gender equality and increase the role of women in development, socialization and policy development," he added.

Wu also highlighted the fact that "violence against women is one of the factors impeding progress towards meeting the development goals," while actively supporting the inclusion of the gender-perspective in the post-2015 development agenda.

Amongst the countries supporting the Chinese ambassador's joint statement were Russia, Pakistan, South Africa and India. Endit
