2.3 pct of BiH territory affected by landmines: official

Xinhua, June 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

About 2.3 percent of the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is affected by landmines, said Adil Osmanovic, BiH Minister of Civil Affairs, here on Friday.

It meant some 15 percent of BiH population is at risk posed by landmines, said Osmanovic during a meeting with Zahira Virani, Deputy Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in BiH.

Osmanovic noted additional efforts should be made to speed up the process of demining.

Virani, meanwhile, called for better coordination between all sides in demining in a bid to make BiH free of landmines by 2024.

Most of the landmines were from the Bosnia War in 1990s. In May 2014, some landmines were surfaced in some parts of the country during the worst flooding in some 120 years. Endit
