Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher in early trading Friday as investor sentiment was boosted by overnight gains on Wall Street and the yen's depreciation against the U.S. dollar.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 178.01 points, or 0.89 percent, from Thursday to 20,168.83. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 15.85 points, or 0.98 percent, to 1,632.51.

Gainers were led by shipping, pulp and paper and textiles. Endi
