Kenya to meet Algeria in volleyball Africa championships final

Xinhua, June 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Africa volleyball dominance by Kenya and Algeria will continue after the two sides claimed wins in the semi-finals of the Africa Championships match in Nairobi on Thursday.

The two are in tussle for the single slot to represent the continent at the World Cup in Japan in September.

Algeria will have to dig deep to deny Kenya the chance to head to the volleyball World Cup, having successfully done so in 2011 to claim the continent's ticket to the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Kenya and Senegal claimed the wins over Cameroon and Senegal respectively in the semifinal of the Women's African Nations Championship in Nairobi.

This is the third final between the African Giants in eight years after 2007 and 2011 when Kenya won both events in Nairobi to compete in the last two World Cup. However, Algeria beat Kenya for the final ticket to the 2012 Olympics.

Kenya set their historic 10th final in 17 editions after they overcame Cameroon 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-22). Algeria stopped the Senegalese winning streak as they won the other semifinal 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-22).

Kenya will be seeking their ninth crown after 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 2005, 2007, 2011, 2013 while Algeria will be eager for the second title after 2009.

In the play off for the fifth to eighth positions, Morocco hammered Botswana 3-0 sets (25-22, 25-22, 25-12) to meet Tunisia for the fifth and sixth standings after the latter overcame Mauritius 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-14).

Botswana face Mauritius for the seventh and eighth positions. Endi
