Slovak representative refuses enforcement of migrant quotas in Schengen Area

Xinhua, June 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Mandatory quotas are not a solution and are not enforceable under the conditions of the Schengen Area, announced Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak on Friday.

Speaking in reference to the European Commission's proposal to relocate across the EU 40,000 refugees mainly from Syria and Eritrea who have arrived in Italy and Greece, Lajcak said that he doesn't want to think of the quotas as an excuse for a potential abolition of the freedom of movement in the EU in the future.

The proposal is up for debate at the upcoming European Council session on June 25-26. Aside from Slovakia, the initiative to resettle the migrants across the EU is also being opposed by a number of other countries, namely the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary and Poland.
