The population of Austria rose 0.91 percent or 77,140 people to a total 8,584,926 over the course of 2014, Statistics Austria stated on Thursday.
The growth, significantly higher than the 0.66 percent recorded in 2013, was primarily driven by a high rate of immigration, though a positive birth rate also contributed.
The strongest growth by total persons was recorded in the national capital Vienna, the 1.73 percent or 30,591 person increase bringing the population there to 1,797,337 people.
Other cities with strong population growth for the year were Innsbruck (1.92 percent), Linz (1.86 percent), and Graz (1.56 percent).
Net migration alone resulted in an increase of 72,324 persons in the country, 62 percent of whom came from European Union member states. The largest of these sources was Romania (12,710 persons), followed by Hungary (7,798 persons) and Germany (5,562 persons).
A large spike was also recorded in migrants from Syria (7,129 persons) and Afghanistan (2,709 persons).
The central statistics office said preliminary results for the first quarter of 2015 show a continued population increase of 17,186 persons, bringing the national total to 8,602,112 persons by April 1. Endit
