Xinhua, June 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

A meeting was held on Thursday in Vietnam's central Binh Thuan province in response to World Day to Combat Desertification that falls on June 17, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Addressing the meeting, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Administration of Forestry Nguyen Ba Ngai called on individuals and organizations to cope with climate change and desertification by planting and protecting trees. Participants and volunteers planted about 2,000 trees along the Bau Trang sand dune.

Vietnam currently has more than 9 million hectares of barren land, accounting for 28 percent of the country's total land area, of which 7.5 million hectares are affected directly by desertification.

Binh Thuan is one of the provinces most heavily affected by desertification, especially in coastal localities. It is increasing forest coverage. Endi
