After a 9-9 draw in four quarters, Canada beat the Netherlands 15-14 in penalty shoot-out at the FINA Women's Water Polo World League Super Final 2015 which kicked off here Tuesday.

At the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, the Netherlands started highly with a 4-1 lead but soon were caught up by the Canadians from the third quarter. Before the final whistle, Canada held a 9-9 draw with the Netherlands and went on to beat their opponents in the penalty shoot-out.

"It is a good start for us in this tournament, especially this is the opening game. I am not only happy with the victory, but happier with the way my team played. It is important that we set the tone of the game. We build up great team spirit and good frame of mind," said Johanne Begin, head coach of Canada.

In the other games played on Tuesday, reigning champions United States swept over Brazil 16-3, hosts China lost to Italy 6-11, and Australia beat Russia 8-4.

The eight world's best women's teams from the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe earned the 'tickets' for the World League Super Final after a long and tough qualification process which started in Autumn 2014 with the European preliminaries and the Intercontinental tournament in Auckland, New Zealand in April 2015.
