The Philippine government expressed the hope Sunday that its athletes competing in the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore could surpass last year's performance.

Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. noted that in last year's event held in Myanmar, Filipino athletes were able to bring home 29 gold, 34 silver and 37 bronze medals.

"As the competition goes on, we're hoping that the Philippines can surpass (it's last year's record)," he said in an interview at a state-run radio station.

He said President Benigno S. Aquino III joins the entire nation in extending support and prayers for the Filipino athletes.

Coloma congratulated those who have already won medals in their respective events.

As of 1 p.m. on Sunday, the Philippines garnered two gold, six silver and eight bronze medals. Endi
