Dynamo beats Shakhtar on penalties to win Ukrainian Cup

Xinhua, June 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Dynamo Kiev beat Shakhtar Donetsk 5-4 on penalty shootout to win the Ukrainian Cup on Thursday night at the Olympic stadium in Kiev.

After a slow and uneventful 90 minutes that ended with a 0-0 draw, the two tired teams seemed to resign themselves to a penalty shootout, without creating fierce attacks or obvious goal-scoring opportunities in the extra-time.

Dynamo had played a part of the stoppage time with 10 men after Sergey Rybalka was sent off for a second yellow card, but Shakhtar failed to reap benefits of its numeral advantage.

The goalkeeper of the "white-blues" Olexandr Shovkovsky became the hero of the match, blocking the powerful shot performed by Shakhtar striker Taison in the penalty shootout.

Following the match, Dynamo secured the Golden Double of Ukraine, winning the country's primary cup competition and its top soccer division.

On May 17, Dynamo secured the Ukrainian Premier League title for the first time in six years. Endi
