Rajoy to make changes to Spanish gov't in wake of election setback

Xinhua, June 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy confirmed on Tuesday that he was planning to make changes to his government in the wake of the poor results obtained by his People's Party (PP) in the local and regional elections held recently in Spain.

Although the PP "won" the elections, it was a bittersweet victory as their share of the vote declined to just 27 percent, causing them to lose control of over 500 local authorities and every regional authority where voting took place.

Should the PP repeat its underperformance in the general election scheduled for November this year, it would see its majority in the Spanish Congress wiped away.

Asked on Tuesday if he was planning to alter his government in an attempt to stop his party's slide in the polls, Rajoy responded, "yes, yes, yes," before indicating the changes would be made before the summer.

However, the Spanish prime minister would not give details of when the changes would be made exactly, nor did he make mention of the members of his government who might step down.

Last week, Rajoy reflected on his party's electoral results indicating, "there are things that have not been done well," and commenting there were things which "need to be corrected." Endit
