International Support Group in Madagascar supports consolidation of democracy

Xinhua, May 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

The International Support Group for Madagascar (GIS-M) says it supports Madagascar for consolidation of democracy and respect for the rule of law after the country's parliament voted to impeach the president, according to a statement released on Thursday by GIS-M.

This declaration was issued following a meeting of the International Support Group members, including representatives of the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union (AU) among others.

The meeting was held on Wednesday after Madagascar's parliament voted to impeach President Hery Rajaonarimampianina early Wednesday morning.

This project of impeachment was sent to the High Constitutional Court (HCC), which should judge the case by 15 days.

"In respecting the sovereignty of the Malagasy State, the International Support Group for Madagascar reiterates its support for democratic elections and appeals to the sense of responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure the stability, peace and sustainable development of country in the interests of the Malagasy people," the statement disclosed.

The GIS-M, set up in March, 2014 in Antananarivo, was aimed at coordinating support of the international community in Madagascar. Endi
