EU increases financial support to CAR

Xinhua, May 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Union (EU) on Tuesday announced that it will increase financial support to the Central African Republic (CAR), focusing on the country's humanitarian needs, recovery and resilience-building.

To draw international attention and support for the CAR, which is still living with the impact of recent conflict, an international conference is taking place in Brussels, hosted by EU High Representative and Vice-President Federica Mogherini.

According to an official statement, the European Commission will increase its assistance for the CAR with a total of 72 million euros (78.56 million U.S. dollars). That includes ten-million-euro humanitarian aid, 40-million-euro budget support and 22 million euros in terms of new contribution to the EU Trust Fund for the CAR.

In addition, the first results of the EU Trust Fund for CAR will be presented at Tuesday's conference, along with the fund's future prospects.

"After years of conflict, the people of the Central African Republic deserve a present and a future of peace. Since the beginning of this crisis, we as the EU have been by their side to help bring recovery, stability and development to the country," said Mogherini.

The Central African Republic has been in the grip of a crisis since 2013 and the state, economic and social structures need to be completely rebuilt, the EU noted. Endit
